Liggett Family'/>
Winslow Robert Liggett 4/01/2011

Hello Family!
Brad and Kyra have their sweet baby boy, born 3.31.11 at 8:24 am, weight 9 pounds 3 ounces (4.17 kilos for us Europeans) and 21 inches long. Kyra was in labor many hours (they count 56 hours), and in the hospital about 24 hours (pushing the last 5 hours) before he was born. I think she looks great after all that! Both Baby and Mom are doing well. They came home from the hospital very late on April 1st. So some of you know that Kyra's niece, Rachel, had suggested the baby be named "Cobra" and Brad and Kyra used "Baby Cobra" as his nickname prior to birth. They did not tell anyone what names they were considering prior to his birth. So, the day after he was born, Brad posted on Facebook his picture and announced his name: Putnam Cobalt Liggett. (Note: that was on April 1st). The next day Brad posted his real name and picture: Winslow Robert Liggett. He had gotten the fake picture by googling "Ugly Baby". Those that responded to the initial April Fool's joke seemed to take the news of the truth well (some showing relief at the real picture and real name)! Fortunately we were not taken in by the joke (we realized it was April 1st and we also knew that he had light brown hair, the fake pictured baby had black hair!
So though we are in Germany and far away, our love and prayers and hearts reach far across the oceans to our sweet Winslow, his parents and all of you. Natalie is at Brad and Kyra's home (was there since Monday, I think) and went through the long waiting with them. Krya's sister Mandi arrived the day after his birth and is also there now. So, Kyra and Brad are being supported. I see pictures of Grandma and Grandpa Heffner with Baby Winslow also. They live 30-45 minutes away.
PLEASE LOOK BELOW FOR A LINK TO PICTURES OF BABY WINSLOW!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/9018585@N06/

Genealogy Ancient Faces Web Site

http://www.ancientfaces.com/

Link to a great web site for your research

Rose Hollenbaugh Melton Family 2009

A picture of family reunion take in Indianapolis in 2009. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. His life was too short but, he will always be remembered by his descendants, friends and family.
Don froze to death in the mountains of Utah after bailing out of a disabled C-119 Air Force airplane. He left a widow and 4 children.
He loved to read and to play his saxophone. When found he was reading " A Stillness at Appomattox " by Bruce Catton. He was tearing out the pages as he read them to try to start a fire. He would not burn the pages in the book untill he read the chapter.
Several of his descendants have served in the military, and several are now serving in the military in Iraq and soon in Afghanistan. We are proud of his Legacy and miss him. We will always love you Dad. Cindy Liggett

Merry Christmas to all from The Liggetts! What a year it has been! Dave went to work at Western Union, is loving his job there and wonders where it has been all his life. Cindy is working in a Dental office which is like playing Brain Age eight hours a day and she hasn't even worked up to dentist! Both of them are new members of the Single Young Adult Ward. Neither one is young or single or even very adult, for that matter, but they are enjoying their new adventure. The kids are growing up and actually moving closer! Camille and Ken are still just around the corner with their 3 little girls, Madeline just turned 8 and Isabelle and Charlotte are 6 and 3. Eric and Hannah have moved to Littleton after graduating from BYU-I and finding a job right here in Denver! Eric graduated in Accounting and Hannah is a Medical Asst. Jay and Molly are still in Cheyenne and embracing their inner cowboys, along with Olivia, 3, and Nate, our first grandson, who is almost 1. Anna is at BYU-I and studying to be an English teacher. She is a Jr. in English Ed. but has already earned her Phd in ice, wind and snow management. All in all we are happy and blessed and loving life with a few frustrations thrown our way for balance. Thanks for your cards and letters. Keep em coming! May your Christmas be merry and bright and your holidays be none too white! Love from Dave and Cindy Liggett

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://virginialiggettsfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/2008/12/2008-christmas-message-dave-cindy.html' title='2008 Christmas Message Dave & We have an offsite meeting on Thursday and then on Friday I'll be going into the office. These are the worldwide HQ for Western Union. They are almost exactly eight miles directly east of where I live - so a quick and easy commute. Some have asked what I'll be doing there. I'll be working in Communications and mainly working on PR and media stories for the U.S. outbound consumer market. Western Union no longer does telegrams but they are the world's largest money transfer company. They have over 320,000 agents in most all countries throughout the world. It's a wonderful job opportunity and I appreciate the support, prayers, positive energy and encourgement my many friends and family members have provided during this process. I will travel some - possibly up to 25% of the time. Not sure yet where those travels will take me - but I should know more in the coming weeks. Thanks to you each and all.DaveDave Liggett Phone: 303-730-7230 Email: DLiggettPR@msn.com
<img width='1' When an infant he was taken to Missouri by his parents, and there our subject resided until 1845, in the month of May of which year, accompanied by his father, Alexander LIGGETT, his mother, 5 sisters and 1 brother, he started with ox-teams to cross the plains to Oregon. At The Dalles, where he arrived 12 October 1845, he suffered the loss of his mother. Hence, after a short delay, the party made the journey down the Columbia to the Cascades on rafts, and thence by boats to the mouth of the Willamette. They now proceeded up the beautiful valley, located in what is now Benton county, and Mr. LIGGETT Sr. took up the tract now known as the Perman HENDERSON claim, but soon after removed to a situation on Mary's river. In 1846 our subject settled on the farm now owned by S. K. BROWN, and in 1849 purchased his present place comprising 317 acres, located about a mile south east from Philomath, where he in engaged in general farming. Married in Benton county, Miss Mary E, daughter of the late James L. MULKEY, whose biography appears elsewhere, by which union they have three surviving children, viz: Louisa J. (now Mrs. James FISK), Frances J. (now Mrs. PETERSON), and Emma.
Alexander Liggett
Birth: 1788 Death: 1864 Alexander LIGGETT (1788-1864) LIGGETT came in the 'forties and took a claim near the Independent school house southwest of Corvallis. After a few years in Belmont Co., Ohio (1800-1804), they moved to the Cleveland area (Cuyahoga Co.), Ohio. These two sons of David Sr. produced many descendents; they had 34 children and a high survival rate. David's family by his first wife stayed in the Cleveland area; those of the second marriage migrated west throughout middle America. The birth year of Asa (1767) was controversial because his affidavit on David Jr.'s pension application conflicted with birth years given in the Dille book for his family. A new set of correct birth dates was found in David Buel Dilley's biography that were some 10 years later than those given in the Dille book. They conform with the ages of the two Saylor sisters who married David and Asa.
Families of Sisters Mary & Frances SAILOR
who married Brothers David & Asa DILLE
By Jack R. Saylor
The following narrative relates to my great-great-great aunts, Mary (Polly) and Frances (Fannah) SAILOR. Mary and Frances were the daughters of Jacob SAILOR (1746-1816) who fought in the Revolutionary War as an Ensign with the 4th Company, 2nd Battalion, Cumberland County (PA) Militia. While living in Washington County, PA, Mary and Frances married two brothers. Mary married David DILLE Jr. (1753-1835) and Frances married Asa DILLE (1755-1842).
David DILLE Jr., his brother Asa DILLE, and a nephew, Samuel DILLE, migrated together to the Cleveland, Ohio area. At the end of the Revolutionary War, when the various colonies claiming western territories ceded their lands to the U.S. Government, Connecticut reserved some land south of Lake Erie called the Western Reserve. After the Treaty of Greenville (1795) , made with the Indians after General Anthony Wayne's campaign, this area became safer for settlers, and in 1796, Moses Cleveland of Connecticut led a band that founded the city of Cleveland. Some of this group were from Pennsylvania, but most were from New England. It was in 1797 that David DILLE Jr. first went to Cleveland to look over the situation. He didn't bring his family until 1803, the year that Ohio was admitted to the Union as a state.
Most of the information regarding David DILLE Jr. and his brother Asa is found in "Pioneer Families of Cleveland, 1796-1840," by Gertrude Van Renssalaer Wickham, Evangelical Publishing House, 1914.
"Ninety years ago there was no family in this locality more familiar than that of DILLE and no other family so numerous. There were three separate branches of the DILLE family in the country headed by two brothers, David and Asa DILLE, and the nephew, Samuel DILLE.
"David DILLE Jr. came from Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1797 to spy out the land. He was a farmer and was looking for fertile soil upon which to locate. He did not find what he wanted in or near the hamlet at the mouth of the Cuyahoga and finally decided upon a 100 acre tract in Euclid. This decision would seem to have barred him and his family from Cleveland local history were it not that they sojourned six weeks in town while their log cabin in Euclid was being built and that the children
and grandchildren intermarried into Cleveland families; so that David's descendants today, many of them of much local importance, are distributed over the length and breadth of the city. His brother, Asa, settled in East Cleveland on Mayfield Road; the nephew, Samuel DILLE, on Broadway...DILLE Road, which crosses Euclid Avenue in East Cleveland, is named for this family.
David DILLE Jr. was the son of David and Mary Wade DILLE of Morris County, NJ. He was a soldier of the Revolution, having served a year as Sergeant, another year as a Lieutenant in the infantry, and two months with the cavalry. Until this last enlistment he was with William Crawford in the ill-fated expedition to northwest Ohio terminating in the burning of Colonel Crawford at the stake by the Indians in the presence of the renegade, Simon Girty. At the age of 78, David DILLE Jr. received a pension for his Revolutionary War services.
It was not until the spring of 1803 that he came west to remain permanently. He was then 50, had been married two times and the father of eight children, the oldest of whom was 22 and the youngest a babe. The family of Asa DILLE, his brother, accompanied him on the journey. The wives of the two men were sisters. They rode all the way from the Ohio River near Wheeling, on horseback, each carrying an infant in her arms, with another child seated behind her, and holding onto its mother for dear life when the road was rough. It took 25 days for the wagons that contained their household effects to traverse the last 25 miles of the journey because there was
no road, nothing but a bridle path, and trees had to be chopped down occasionally to make this wide enough for the team to get through.
The first wife of David DILLE Jr. was Nancy VIERS. They had five sons and a daughter. The second wife was Mary SAILOR whom David married in 1797. The log cabin of the DILLE family is said to have been of generous hospitality and good cheer. In it, 14 more children were added to the family making in all 22, of whom 18 reached maturity. Meanwhile, the older members in it had been married and some of their children were born before all of David's second brood had reached its limit. The army record of the David DILLE family was most unusual. Besides that of the
father in the War of the Revolution was that of his three sons, Lewis, Luther, and Asa DILLE, who belonged to Captain Murray's Company, recruited in Cleveland in the War of 1812. David DILLE Jr. had six sons and 13 grandsons who fought in the Civil War. The five sons of David and Nancy Viers DILLE remained in this locality for the remainder of their lives, but many of the grandchildren removed to the western states as did several of David DILLE Jr.'s children by this second marriage."
Ref.: "Pioneer Families of Cleveland, 1796-1840," by Gertrude Van Renssalaer Wickham, Evangelical Publishing House, 1914."
Jack R. He was the son of David Jr. who together with Moses Cleaveland [note the spelling] founded Cleveland, Ohio. There's still a Dille road in Cleveland-Euclid, Ohio. David Buel Dille became a Mormon and moved to Kirkland, Ohio.
He was one of the founders of Nauvoo, Illinois, where he helped build the temple (he was a stonemason). His homesite is in the records at the visitors' center. He was a member of the Nauvoo Masonic Lodge, together with Joseph Smith and Brigham Young.
He went west with Brigham Young and helped found Salt Lake City. All this qualified him as a "Mormon Pioneer." He had several wives and many children. David Buel Dille was my first cousin three times removed! My ancestor Caleb Dille was David Jr.'s brother. Louisa was traveling in one of his wagons and the leader of the party suggested that the two combine households.
According to his history he was a stone cutter in the summer and a cloth dyer, fuller and finisher in the winter before he married. He taught school in Will County, Illinois. As he states, after leaving Lake County, Indiana, where he left his mother:
"I then took my family and went to New Orleans, Louisiana and from there we came up the Oista River to Munno. Stayed there a short time but the spirit of discontent was still with us and within, and came back up the Mississippi River and the Ohio as far as Miciceluca, Kentucky. I split rails for my bread and bacon and built a log house to live in. When summer come I taught a school the next winter, built a lot house and I doctored some. When spring come I bought a good farm, built a log house on it and next fall I sold out and we came to Nauvoo. And by all these movements and doings I have found out why we were not contented to do well some other place. When we got to Nauvoo, among the Saints we were contented and we stayed there until we were driven away by the Edict of Governor Ford in the year of 1846.
When we left Nauvoo we brought with us one good cow, and that was all the stock we had. We came to Benton's Port a little village on the Des Moines River, Van Buren County, Iowa. We stayed here four years and come away with a good outfit, two wagons, three yoke of oxen, one good mare. We left Iowa in the spring of 1850. My wife Harriet died the second day travel west from the Missouri River. We buried her without a coffin with Temple garments on her body. I then married a widow woman that I had brought with me from Bentons Port. She had three children, two sons, one daughter.
This widow woman did not prove true to me for she left me. But before she left I had had sealed to me Elizabeth Wood. She has born to me four sons and two daughters. Elizabeth's oldest son and youngest daughter are dead."
This is now June 1886 at Warm Creek. (taken from a history on file at the DUP Museum)
Another history gives the following account:
"When we left Bentons Port to go West we left with a good outfit. . . . It is the spring of 1850. I brought with me a widow woman and her three children (two sons and one daughter). My wife Harriet died with the cholera the day travel West, 24 miles from the Missouri River. . . Our company buried eight in the same place. I then married the widow woman that I had brought with me from Bentons Port. Her name was Louisa Dolfamire. Her maiden name was Louisa Hort. The sermon was said by Elder Jonathon O. Dune. This widow woman did not prove true to me for she left me.
1 Change Date: 30 Apr 2003 at 09:32:01
Marriage 1 Louisa HURT b: 4 Jun 1820 in ,Madison,Virginia
Divorced: My grandmother on my
father's side is the link.
Harriet Lucinda Dille. She married George Albert Watson. I have a great
deal of genealogy
for them if you're interested.

And for the list, there will be a Dille family reunion next year in either
southern Idaho or Utah for those of the David Buel
Dille clan and any others who want to attend. Last year there was a grand
gathering in American Fork, Idaho of the posterity
of four of David's five wives, many I had never met. A new book has been
written and published but much information is
missing for a lot of you who they either were not in contact with.

I'd like to get that corrected and add as many of us as we can in another
book, a huge project I know, but I'd like to try to
do this. All of you who want to be part of the new book please put as much
as your information on the list whether you are
descendants of David Buel or not. I believe we all should be represented if
we want to. It will quite a project and make take
quite some time but I do believe it will be worthwhile for all of us.

Is Sharon Gallup still on the list? I'd love to hear from you.

By the way, I'm Jann Hutchison from Twin Falls, Idaho.
----- Original Message -----
From: <tnoye@aol.com>
To: <dilley-l@rootsweb.com>
Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2004 8:40 PM
Subject: Welcome Roberta!

Teddy,
My name is Roberta Schultze from San Jose, California. My mother is a
Dilley by birth (from Missouri). I think that I just signed up for your
newsletter. My mom was born to Franklin Oswald Dilley and Margaret Viola
Erwin, in DeWitt, MO on August 10, 1919. She is still alive at 84, the last of six
brothers and sisters. She has Parkinson's disease and some associated
"difficulties" but still remembers a lot about her family. My grandfather
is listed as a son of Neahmiah (I'm unsure of the spelling) and Karolean Keaton as
"Frank".
I'm sure that I can talk with her and know that she can correct
some information about her dad's family and perhaps also add some contemporary
additions.
I was actually trying to find information on the Schultze family and
got frustrated because our branch from Germany c. 1850 is so small.

Then I started on my dad's grandmother's family: Totten, from NY c.17th
century-20th century NY, but got frustrated because not knowing her parents names, so I
thought I'd switch to Dille/Dilley...talk about PROLIFIC!

We have the book on the Dille/Dilley family (which I need to find)
300 Years of the Dille/Dilleys in America.

I am aware that the spelling of surnames varied over time and
individuals with the same individual surname sometimes being spelled
several different ways. If I remember correctly, my mom said that her dad some of his
brothers changed the spelling from Dille to Dilley. The ones on the north side of
the Missouri River added the "y" while the ones on the south side of the river
continued the "D-i-l-l-e" spelling. The Dilleys on the north side of the river
were blond and blue-eyed while the Dilles south of the Missouri River were
dark haired and dark eyed. I don't know whether or not it's true, but it makes
a nice story.

Roberta Schultze

Don & Lena Liggett's Song 1942

Most every couple has a song they call their song. I saw closet bins in her house before any place else.
Plus 2 = 3 counting you.

your fathers father= Donald G. Liggett 1918-1958 He had to eat banana's and drink water to weigh enough to get into the air force. He almost died of phenomena in 1943. You would not be here if he had not survived.

your fathers mother= Lena Belle Hollenbaugh 1921- She worked for a Lutheran minister when she joined the Mormon church. She had cancer in 1953.

your mothers father= David Harris Asay- He was injured in a horse stall when a horse moved and pushed him against the wall of the stall.

your mothers mother= Charlotte Frances Greene - I know very little about her, but she was wonderful when I traveled to her home years ago.
Plus4 now = 6 plus you.

Your Great Grand parents: Note 3 of 4 died within 3 year period.

Pikus Valoris Liggett 1867-1944=He was almost killed in mine cave in in Bisbee, Arizonia about 1905. You would not be here if his further brother in law had not dug him out of the mine. He had a twin brother Rufus Bigelowe Liggett., nick named Jack ( I wonder why )

Jon Bertie Bledsoe 1880-1947= I was told she read the Bible every day. Died in Deer Lodge, Montana buried in Indianapolis, Indiana I have a letter in her hand writing addressed to : My darlings three ( being Don, Lena & Doug Liggett. )

James Harold Hollenbaugh 1897-1946= Once was a Milk man and manager of an A&P store. Loved to hunt, and had a heart attack while on a hunting trip.

Mary Maude Leamasters 1898-1979= She had 7 brothers who all died young. She and 3 sisters all survived and married and lived to be in their 60's and 80's.When she was young she had a red dress she loved but her family disapproved of her wearing it. I have a picture of her in this dress. If she had died like her brothers you would not be here.Your mothers side is not in my data base. she has not shared this information.
There would be 4 more people.that makes 8 total now at 16 plus you

Your second Great grand parents:
Francis Marion Liggett 1831-1871 =Farmer lived next door to the Dennis family in 1850 census. I know very little about him, not even where he is buried. He did father 8 boys and 1 girl, all lived and married, raised by their mother a very poor widow.

Nancy Jane Dennis 1830-1919= born in Indiana.Out lived her husband by almost 50 years. Married in Missouri and died in Oklahoma. My father and uncle talked about her but they were both very young when she died. She had 3 nephews in the Civil War from Indiana and several uncles who served some on confederate side.

Willliam Lewis Bledsoe 1841-1919 = farmer served in Civil war Company F 7th Kentucky Union. He fathered 19 children with two wives. I have a picture of his farm in Oklahoma with he and his second wife and I assume some of his kids in front of a log house. Also a family picture with my grandmother in it.

Phebe Jane Thrall 1846-1895= Born in Ohio died in Oklahoma. I believe she met her husband when he was in the hospital where her dad worked during the Civil War. They married in Ohio and she went to Kentucky with him. Your aunt Beth has a spoon which I was told belonged the her has PJ engraved on it.

Edward Burns Hollenbaugh 1871-1932= Glassblower by trade. Born in Pennsylvania and died in Indianapolis. Grandma Lena really loved this man she told me.

Rosa Lavinia McGail 1878-1920= Born in Indiana died in Ohio had 3 husband. A beautiful woman. Her father was from Canada. She was in later life a drug addictI was told and she said ' It's a poor hen who can't fret for her own chicks' I have pictures of her.

Joseph Douglas Leamasters 1861-1908= Farmer. I have several pictures of him. A very handsome man. Lena Belle Hollenbaugh Liggett my mother told me that Joseph Douglas Lemaster added the A and the S to Lemaster to spell the name LEAMASTERS name orginally LaMastrie or LaMaster. French origin.

Anna Mariah Boyd 1866-1963= I knew this woman. I always saw her in the kitchen with an apron on. She would tell the kids : ' Get out of my kitchen or I'll cut your ears off ' with a knife in her hand. She became bed ridden and my aunt Lena took care of her and my uncle Archie who was paralyzed until she died at 96.

Your mothers side is not in my data base. she has not shared this information.
There would be 8 more people.that would be 16 more people now we have 32 plus you, only 5 generations.
Now you get to Joseph Liggett Jr 1808-1852 and Mary Thompson 1808-1851. It took me over 20 years to find out her maiden name. She had been married to Fielding Johnson first and had a son with him. The Johnson family intermarried with both the Dennis family and the Liggett family. A whole bunch of them in the data base.
You would now be up to 64 plus you with generation # 6
Then 132 then 264 then 512 then 1024 the 2048 then 4096 then 8192.
At 13 generations.
Eric, do you begin to understand what family research means?I did this so you can see these were people. They are much more than names and dates. Living breathing people who loved, worked, had faults, divorced, lost kids to death, moved all over the country, and worked all kinds of different jobs,. We have relatives who went to the poor home, the insane asylum, the soldiers home, killed by a train, killed by a relative, killed by a farm tractor, buried and died in unknown places. Family History ( Genealogy ) is a study of history and how it affected your family and who you are. You must love the past and want to know these people and their personalities to spend the hours and hours required to find the smallest fact.
Two nights ago I found an 1876 census of Howard County, Missouri. It listed Nancy Jane Liggett and her kids. Of course her husband had been dead for 5 years. I found Pikus ( My grand father ) listed as Pike and a older brother Thomas A. whom for years I knew only as Ansley. Now I know his full name. Pike's youngest brother is listed as Oliver P. Yet I'm told his name was Joseph Andew and I have his death certificate. My aunt Myrle said the family always called him 'Babe' since he was the last one born. These are the kind of mysteries that you find and try to find out the truth. You have at least 5 grand fathers in the civil war. some in the war of 1812, some proven in the revolutionary war.
You have Scotch, Irish, English, French, Canadian and German, blood running thru you that are proven ancestors. Now are you ready to jump in and help uncle Doug find out more about who we are, and how we came to be who we are?I need some younger minds to embrace the quest.
Love,
Uncle Doug

Welcome to Family members and friends

This site is dedicated to all our common ancestors who preceeded us.
The items here are placed in loving memory of these people.
Please show respect and love when posting to this site.
