We must know where we came from , to know where we are going. This is William Lewis Bledsoe's family farm Kingfisher County, Oklahoma Ca: 1898 William had two wives and nineteen children. He, his father, and his father in law all 3 served the Union Army in the Civil War. William is bearded man in front of open door.

Hiram Liggett's Journal 28 February 1881

Hiram Liggett Journal:
Slater, Saline Co. Mo. February the 28th 1881. A partial or imperfect history of past events, as I can not get all of the events, that transpired; but what I write shall be correct and true.

Joseph and Mary Liggett, Father and mother of Hiram Liggett, Emigrated from With (Wythe, FDL) County West Virginia, to Missouri in the year A.D. 1817, and settled in what is now Howard County, on the north side of the Missouri River and within (4) four miles of Boons Lick, as Daniel Boon had been here first, and made salt at the aforesaid salt springs. And Boutht a fine tract of land, at the head of what is now knowen as Liggett's Bottom, on which he improved and made a very fine Farm, and in after years, built for himself a fine two story Brick dwelling in which he lived for many years, and raised a large Family of children. And where he lost his wife, as God seen fit to call her home, to Heaven on the 11 day of January, A.D. 1847.
As I know but little about either of my grand Parents, I can hardly speak of them. grand Father Liggett's name was John (1760, FDL). I do not know grandma Liggetts maiden or Christian name. Be that as it may they had 11 children (children of John and Hannah Liggett, FDL) William, James, Jonathan, Joseph, Thomas, and Alexander. Sons. Margaret, who married Robuert Dunlap, Ann who married James Dunlap, Hannah who married John Brawley; Mary who married William Anderson and Ellen who married John Harris. All of whome, came to Missouri and raised families. But Jonathan and Alexander Liggett, Emigrated to Oregon with their families many years since. Wm (William, FDL) Anderson, with his children went to Oregon, he haven lost his wife in Mo. The remainder of the connections have either died or are now living in this and the surrounding states.
Joseph Liggett; (the Father of Hiram Liggett) Was borned on the 3 day of December A.D. 1785. Was reared on a farm in West Va. Until he was large enough, his father put him into Flowering Mill which business he followed for several years; But had the misfortune to loose his father (by death) But he soon rallied as he still had his Mother's advice and council. And many were the sports he had in the mountains of Va. And many a Deer was brought to the ground, by his Rifle for he rarely, ever, missed his mark, as he was a good marksman, with is Rifle, as nearly all of the young men of those days were. And what he got after the large Black Bears ont eh mountains or in thickets of Laurels some times he would kill two a day. He did not have as many dogs as Davy Crocket, but was a much better marksman; consequently got more game. It is needless to speak of the Wolves-Foxes-Panthers and wild Turkeys that came to their death by his Rifle. But young Joseph soon found that there was a different sphere in life for him. In the year 1805 he married Miss Mary Cook of Virginia, who had two brothers, named John and Henry. She also had Some Sisters, but I do not know what their christian names were.
And as I have stated on the first page They moved to the Territory of Missouri in the year A.D. 1817. (I blive this country all went under the name and as the Territory of Louisianna at that time) Joseph and Mary Liggett had and raised nine children seven boys and two daughters (To Witt) Joseph, Martha, Enoch, William, Jonathan, Elizabeth (Borned in Virginia) Stephen, Hiram, and Elexander (Alexander, FDL). The three last were borned in Missouri.
Hereafter in speaking of my Parents I shall call them by the endearing names of Father and Mother.
Father was about 3 months from the time he started from Va. Before they got to Mo. Uncle Thomas Liggett and family came out at the same time.
They all started for Boons Lick, Mo, and would not stop short of it, Father landed at the lick or salt springs Christmas Eave, 1817, struck camp whee he said he could get a drink of good fresh water and by just stepping eight or ten feet to one side, he could get a drink of salt water. The salt and fresh water was coming out of the earth, so near together which was a sight to him, as salt water was never knowen to be found at the earths surfice in Virginia nor any where that he had been until he landed at Boons Lick. Father drove two good milch cowes with him to this country, and it was well he did, for you could not buy one here at that time for love or money. He went to Sqr Ben Cooper who had 18 fat Hogs to buy some Pork, but Cooper would not let him have any although he offered him 18cts per lb gold. Mr Cooper said no (he would sell his meat in Bacon.) In the winter and spring of 1818, he cleared up some 7 acres of land, put a fence around it, and planted the same in corn, its being fresh land and a good season, he gathered about 90 Bu of corn per acre that Fall, for which he was very thankful. As he had in the spring when he commensced, his crop paid $100 gold, for 200 Bushels of frostbitten corn, so much so that he had to dry it over the fire before it could be ground into meal.
Could kill all the Deer and wild Turkeys and some times a Black Bear, and get all the Honey, that they wanted, and catch as many Fish from the Missouri River, as they wanted, all of which he said I once though I would never tire of, But before I could get any Pork, it appeared like I should almost starve, I became so tired of wild meats. The Early settlers of Missouri, had to Build Forts of Timber, and the people all collected into them, in order to defend themselves against the Indians, as they were very troublesome, and would skulk and hide around and would kill the whites when ever they could catch them out. Two of said Forts were built in what is now knowen as Coopers Bottom
on the Missouri River. The Indians at one time got into the Fort its being a verry dark night, some of them got around Cournal Coopers house (which was a log cabin) and picked the chinking out of one of the cracks and shot and killed Cooper, when he was sitting the fire. Miss McMahan, being close by, gathered a pail of water, and threw it on the fire, so as to estinguish it, and make the room dark so as to prevent the Indians from seeing them by the light. (Miss McMahan married Mr. Guinn, and he is now living in Saline county near Slater. She is now quite old but very stout of her age. Mr. Guinn and wife has raised a large family in Mo.
In the winter and spring of 1815 or 16, the people all moved out of the Forts, and went to work clearing the land and fencing preparatory for their crops, But while one man would work cutting down and clearing up the timber an other man would have to take his Rifle gun and stand watch so the Indians could not creep up on the one at work and kill him without his knowing they were near. At one time Alexander Liggett was clearing off some land, and when he was chopping on a log that lay up some distance from the earth when the man on watch seen an Indiana creeping up to shoot Liggett, buty when the Indian laid his gun up on a bush to shoot, but the watchman's Rifle cracked and Indian fell over ded, and Liggett fell too, but not wonded, he heared the report of the Rifle, and thinking the Indian had missed him, he fell from the log to keep him from shooting at him again. At an other time three Indians came in to ther fiel, where Jonathan Liggett was howing corn, two of the Indians wanted to kill him, but the third did not, and after they had held a long consultation, they took Liggett's hat and left him, he never more seen his hat, but thought himself lucky that it was not his head.
In the Summer and Fall of 1818, Joseph Liggett said that he seen a lady
who had the ague, for the first time in his life, said that it was a grate curosaty to see a person huvering over the fire, it being verry warme weather; as he never had seen or heared of chills, in the Mountains of Virginia)
But in one year, from that time Mr. Liggett found out what it was to have chills, as he took them, and could not get red of them for over Eight months, and he said that he never did get as well as he was before. I do not remember as my Mother every had chills and Fever. She enjoyed remarkable good health, until her death, which was as I have said on the 11 day of Jan 1847. My Father Joseph Liggett died on the 16th day of January A.D. 1864.
I'll now give the names of Joseph & Mary Ligett's children, the oldes first, and continue according to their several ages.
Joseph, the eldest son. (Ican not give the time of their births) married Miss Rachael Lakey, who lived about 4 years and give birth to two sons (whose names were Jermiah and John) The last of which she died in child bed. Some years after Joseph, married a widow Johnson who had one son by Johnston;
Then had five children, two sons, and three daughters, all of who are now living except the oldest son. Joseph then lost his wife some tow years before his death which was on the 22th of Feb 1852.
The names of his 5 last children are F. M. Liggett, (who is now ded) married Miss N. J. Dennis, who is now living in Slater, (with large Family)
Elizabeth Liggett married M. Croslin.

John his brother died when young.
Joseph Liggett was a member of and deacon in the Christian Church for many years and died in the full hope of the Christian faith. Martha Liggett married John Stapp of Howard Co and raised a large family of children. They were bouth Christians and belonged to the Christian Church for many years before their deaths. John, was taken with a pain in the Thye, which was thought to be hollow swelling and after severall months of suffering, he was releaved from his suffering by death. He was taken from his wife and children in the prime of life, he lived as a christian and died as he had lived.
His wife Marth (Martha, FDL), lived many years after his death, lived to see all of her children raised and married (Except the youngest son). And died in the Spring of 1878. After having suffered for many months with a Cancer in her right breast, which eats the brest all away she expired after having suffered death many times She was a ture Christian; and had many feares that the Roman Catholicks would get the Reigns of this government, and distroy the Christian Religion; which gave her some trubble as she was a zealous Christian and died in the tryumps of Faith (Will not give the names of their children as several are ded.)
Enoch Liggett married Miss Rebecca Bobbitt in the year 1839. Had two children (sons) who died while Infants. Enoch and Rebecca have lived a long and eventful life, having had a good deal of truble during the last War. The Union Soldiers went to his house and Burned it, drove him and his wife out in to the street (at Lisbon Howard Co) Also he and his brother the writer of this sketch, were in copartner ship, and had been for many years, First as Merchants at Arrow Rock Saline Co. and afterwards in the year 1854 in bulding up and laying out the little town of Lisbon in Howard Co. Mo. Hiram named the town after the Capital of Portugal (but it has fallen short of its ancester) At which . . . [undecipherable handwritten text] (moved to Mo. with . . . Jonathan Liggett married Miss Mary Stapp daughter of james Stapp. They had Four children whose names was Martha Ann, the Eldest, Elizabeth, Harvey E. and Amanga, the youngest who is ded; Honathan lost his wife on the 10th of November 1850 and he lived but a shorte time and died on the 31 of October 21851. They both were Christians and belonged to that church. They passed a way early in life will be gathered with the blesses, when the Savior comes to gather his home.
Elizabeth married Joseph Q. McClain. They lived together some 3 or 4 years (had no children) when she died Feb 19th 1845. She belonged the Christian Church for some years before her death. She sleeps the sleep of death in Christ.
Stephen Liggett married Miss Annie Sappington of Saline Co Mo in the year 46 or 1847. They had two children; sons, James W. and John H. who are both living and have families. Stephen died the 24th March A.D. 1852. The Widow after some years married Mr. Robert Fitzegerrel a widower who had several children of a former marriage. Stephen professed Faith in Christ and joined the Christian Church several years before his death. Annie is yet living and has raised a large family of children. Fitzegerrel having died several years since. Annie has belonged to the Presbyterian church for many years. (Note: Presby. was crossed out and Methodist written and initialed JWL)

The Boards was held to their place by laying on weight poles, with knees placed between to hold the poles a proper distance from each other. Borned Sept 27th 1875. Mrs. P. G. Liggett was borned the 14th July 1841 and had Fourteen Brothers and Sisters, 4 Brothers and ten girls, her parents came to Missouri From Kentucky. Mr. Garvin's name was James and his wifes Caroline, whose maden name was Thomas. They raised a large famly as you have seen. They are now sleeping the sleep of death awaiting the Masters call toggather Them home to rest. The Reinvention of John Liggett After viewing Nigel Turner's 2003 edition of The Men Who Killed Kennedy, I developed a passing interest in a section of part 1 - The Smoking Guns. For 17 minutes the program centered on embalmer John Liggett and focused on the unsubstantiated theory that he might have been summoned by nefarious individuals to reconstruct JFK's bullet shattered head. In order for Mr. Turner to support this theory, he provides on camera interviews of three individuals who seem to know something. But what and where is the proof? I have always approached Turner's investigative work with caution. In an episode of his original The Men Who Killed Kennedy, laced with much innuendo but little of provable substance, he provided "evidence" that Frenchmen Sauveur Pironti and Roger Bocognoni were members of "the" Kennedy assassination hit team. Turner got into hot water with the British Parliament when it was shown, at the time of the assassination, Pironti was aboard a French naval minesweeper as a crew member and Bocognoni was in a French jail. It appears Turner might have used similar conventions in the current tale. Charles Smith, who is identified as a mortician, appears in Turner's new program briefly. Smith supplies unconfirmed information that Liggett, as the narrator puts it, "was a highly skilled embalmer." "If he had to build a lip or nose or build an eye orbit or ear he may work all night long doing the re-constructive work on someone that had been maybe shot in the face or automobile accident. He was the best, he would tell you he was the best, and when he finished it the families would tell him he was the best." The Smoking Guns' narrator next takes us to "a small town in Oklahoma" where we meet Liggett's "former wife" Lois. We are told: "Lois married him in Dallas after a whirlwind romance only three months before Kennedy's assassination." Lois tells us "John was a very charming person. And I found him to be very attentive and considerate and very, very sweet to me. I loved him. I fell in love with him." Back to the narrator - "On the day of the assassination John was with Lois at Restland (Cemetery in Dallas) attending the funeral service of her late aunt. He was suddenly called from the gravesite." Lois continues: "John went to the office and came back very shortly and explained to me that the President of the United States had been shot. And that he was called to go to Parkland Hospital. I went home after the funeral and it was about 2 o'clock in the afternoon and John called me from Parkland. I could hear confusion in the background and I asked him what was going on . . . he said the president has died. And I said well did Restland get the job? And he said no - some other funeral home got the job but he said 'I've got a lot of work to do. Don't try to call me, I'll call you as soon as I can.' And it was about 24 hours before I heard from him." The stepdaughter, Debra Godwin, seems to do more talking about Liggett's activities than Lois. "John came into our lives less than a year after our own father, Charles Godwin, had been killed in a private plane crash. And John was not real welcomed by my two older sisters, my brother, and myself. And he had a ready-made cover. And that's what I've always thought is that we were a convenient cover for a man who needed . . . needed that." The Social Security Death Index shows Charles Godwin was born on January 24, 1924 and died in July of 1962 at age 38. Debra had at least two older siblings, Char-Lee and Bennie. Doing a little math, I tend to believe we are being asked to accept the sometimes quite vivid memories of a woman who was a teenager when these events were presumably taking place.

For eight minutes or so there is discussion of John rushing home, demanding the family pack up and leave, a "high speed journey" to Austin and then San Antonio, and along the route there are clandestine meetings with Liggett's relatives and friends. What is Lois' take on this peculiar story? "Throughout this journey there were conversations that went on between John and his relatives and friends that I did not feel like I was privy to. That they were . . . they knew something I didn't know. And I didn't understand what was going on." Narrator: "In the early hours of Sunday morning November 24th the family finally checked into a motel near Corpus Christi. John had a further meeting, this time with his elder brother Malcolm." Lois: "Here again they had conversations that made me feel like I didn't belong. That they knew something I didn't know. I don't know why we were there but it seemed to be very important to John that we were there." One year following this 2003 broadcast, as part of "a federal lawsuit against A&E Networks, the company operating The History Channel", Malcolm Liggett provided evidence that he was in California at the time of Lois' claims of clandestine meetings. Back to Debra who indicates that John was watching the TV news intently and she was with him when John saw Ruby kill Oswald. Lois interjects, "The minute he saw that he looked at me and said everything's OK now. And you could just see his face. It was like all the pressure had been taken off of him." The story continues that they return to Dallas where Liggett comes into money and develops a new lifestyle "moving (the family) into luxury home." Liggett becomes a "big time gambler hosting some of the wildest poker parties in Dallas." Later Debra discusses an "occasion that my sister Bennie and my mother both recall of a visit from one of John's rather eccentric friends from New Orleans and he was a rather freakish character and my sister claims we made merciless fun of him, the kids my brother my sister, because he was rather odd with the painted on eyebrows and the wig this rather freakish man. John said to us that this was a friend of his from the Civil Air Patrol that they had been in Civil Air Patrol together. And we believe that this was David Ferrie." But this becomes an interesting change of view. Debra goes from third party story teller ("my sister Bennie and my mother both recall") to first party witness ("we made merciless fun of him"). So why doesn't Lois support Debra's information on camera by saying that she too remembers him? Lois comes right out and says she believes her late ex-husband (Lois divorced Liggett in 1966) was involved in the Kennedy assassination and "His role was to do something to the body. How - alter it fix it - I have no idea. Now he may have gone with it to Bethesda. I think his job was to do something with that body - of John F. Kennedy." In less than three years Lois instigates a divorce from this "very charming person" who she originally "found … to be very attentive and considerate and very, very sweet. . ." We are never told why. The narrator claims that, "In 1974, out of the blue, Liggett was arrested for attempted murder." And we are told that Dorothy Peck, supposedly a friend of Liggett, was beaten and left for dead in her Garland, Texas home. Before dying of her injuries, she identified Liggett as the assailant. He was then arrested and later linked to other brutal murders in the Dallas area. But no evidence is offered to support the claim that Peck was a friend of Liggett. The Dallas Morning News reported that he might be "a man who reportedly accompanied Mrs. Peck home from a Greenville Avenue nightclub." Lois indicates sometime in 1993 she was summoned to a meeting in a park in Austin initiated by John's brother Malcolm. Malcolm warned her to keep away from John "if you care anything about your children or yourself." She felt Malcolm was keeping her from corresponding with John because John would "tell her something either Malcolm or someone Malcolm knows didn't want John to tell me." Lois was so frightened by this she moved to Lubbock, Texas "and a few weeks later I got a call from a friend there who told me John had been shot in the back - and was dead." So here we have Lois, whose whirlwind romance (and marriage) only three months before Kennedy's assassination ended in divorce three years later, claiming continued contact with Liggett and his brother Malcolm. Interestingly enough, Debra is brought on camera again. She is asked to look at a picture provided by someone whom we do not know but we quickly find out why. Debra claims it is a photograph of Jack Ruby with Malcolm Liggett and his wife Suzanne . I guess this is to provide some sort of link between Ruby, John Liggett, and the assassination. The whole scenario soon imploded. As mentioned above, Malcolm Liggett filed a federal lawsuit against A&E Networks, the company operating The History Channel." Liggett was able to show the photograph used was not of him and his wife and they had never met Ruby. "A settlement was reached in March (2004) but the terms are confidential, according to (Richard) Brown (Liggett's attorney) and The History Channel." Narrator: "On the morning of February 14, 1975 Liggett was being transferred with other prisoners from the courthouse in downtown Dallas to the nearby county jail. The police vehicle had entered the garage when Liggett, using a hidden key, slipped out of his handcuffs and made a bid for freedom. A single shot in the back, fired by a sheriff's deputy killed him instantly." Newspaper reports show this claim is inaccurate. "Liggett fell face down on the sidewalk. Deputies said he had a "faint heartbeat" when he was loaded into an ambulance." As sometimes happens with this type story, there are interlopers who want to get into the act. First up is convicted swindler Billie Sol Estes. In JFK, The Last Witness (Flammarion, 2003) by William Reymond and Billy Sol Estes, Estes declares a connection between Liggett and Dorothy Peck, the widow of Jay Bert Peck (1902 - 1969). Estes claims Jay Bert Peck was Lyndon Johnson's "official" double and that "Peck would have replaced Lyndon B Johnson in the night of November 21 to 22, 1963. Peck would have passed for LBJ in Fort Worth. This was where Johnson was staying the day before the assassination according to the Warren Report. In that way the vice-president could travel incognito to Dallas to regulate the details of an operation aimed at assassinating John F. Kennedy." Also according to Billie Sol Estes, Jay Bert Peck would later have been murdered by John Liggett, who would then be arrested for the attempted murder of Peck's widow. Next from the JFK Lancer forum we have Ron Ecker who, on March 2, 2005 claims Liggett was a victim of la ley fuga: "This was a form of execution commonly used in Mexico (the victim would be shot "while trying to escape"), and was known as la ley fuga. I believe la ley fuga was supposed to be applied to Oswald right after the assassination, but apparently something got lost in the translation from Spanish to English. Ron" Internet web sites define la ley fuga as a type of execution used in Mexico over 100 years ago during the Mexican Revolution. The prisoner's restraints are removed and he is given the opportunity to flee. If the firing squads bullets do hit the prisoner and he escapes - he is free man. The possibilities of escape under these conditions are virtually impossible. Mr. Ecker, as will be shown in the newspaper articles, may be off the mark when he interprets Liggett's shooting as la ley fuga or the law flight. Here are the newspaper reports surrounding Liggett's death and the Dallas police department's interest in him. Maybe, just maybe, Lois' very attentive, considerate and very, very sweet ex was potentially a serial killer.

John Melvin Liggett died on a Parkland Hospital operating table at 3:30 p.m. Friday about 30 minutes after he was shot in the back by Deputy Joe Crawford of the Dallas County Sheriff's Department. The shooting occurred on the Houston Street side of the old jail, just outside the sally port that serves as a loading dock for taking prisoners in and out of the old detention facility. Deputies said the incident occurred after Liggett and 11 other prisoners had been transported back to the old jail after making court appearances in the Dallas County Courthouse. During the one block ride, deputies said Liggett somehow freed himself from his handcuffs. When the paddy wagon doors were opened, according to officers, Liggett bolted out and ran outside the sally port. Officers said Liggett was running north along alongside Houston Street when Crawford ordered the man to halt. When Liggett did not heed the command, deputies said, Crawford fired one shot from his .9mm pistol. Liggett fell face down on the sidewalk. Deputies said he had a "faint heartbeat" when he was loaded into an ambulance. Crawford, 27, a former public service officer for the Dallas Police Department, has been a sheriff's deputy 15 months. Deputy Ronald McWilliams was assisting Crawford in the transfer. John Melvin Liggett, 41, in the Dallas County jail awaiting trial on indictments for intent to murder, arson and aggravated robbery, was shot by Deputy Joe Crawford when he fled from a jail chain while being returned to the old county jail from a court appearance at 2 p.m. Friday. And Nathan Drew Miller, 26, of 4323 Brown, was shot and killed by off-duty Dallas police officer James Jolly, 23, after Jolly surprised Miller in the act of stealing a city-issed shotgun from the officer's car early Friday morning. Liggett was arrested last March and the charges against him stemmed from the March 26 attack on Mrs. Dorothy Peck, 44, at her home at 1202 Melrose in Garland. Friday, Liggett was taken to Judge Ed Gossett's Criminal District Court No. 5 for a pre-trial hearing. OBITUARY:The following is from the Lamar Missouri newspaper--Mrs. Mary Jane
Vier,93 years of age,died in this city at 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 27 1936 after
a period of three years in bed. She became very weak last Friday a week ago and
continued to grow weaker until the end came,without suffering Friday night.
Dr V.T.Bickel toldthe family Thuyrsday there was no hope for the aged patient
who had lived so many years beyond her allotted time of three score years and
ten.
Since last Sunday two days after her usual strength began to fail,Mrs Vier knew
that the time was near. She was conscious to the end a,but had few arrangements
to make.
These she had made and paid for three years prior to her death. At the time she
chose the undertaker,minister,the songs that were to be sung and asked that the
poem "Crossing the Bar" by Tennyson be used in the service. She asked that Rev.
Hadstock assist Rev. Fox in the service. She very much appreciated ____________
___________ Mr Rader who visited her and the flowers he brought her throughout
a long period of time.
Mrs. Vier was born on Christmas Day in the year 1842,making her 93 years,three
months and two days of age. She was born in Terre Haute Indiana and her parents
came down the Ohio River on a raft from Pennsylvania when they moved their
household goods in this manner to the westward____of Indiana.
Deceased was married to William Vier September 12 186_,the year before the
Civil War at Terre Haute.
From Indian the family moved to the north part of this state near
Marshall,where they lived during the Civil War. It was while living there that
the Bushwhackers went to the home,while her husband Wm Vier was away
fighting,stole their horses,cattle,cows and other farm stock,leaving her almost
destitute.
When Mr Vier returned at the close of the War,he moved the family to Jasper
County as Barton county was the called. They moved to Lamar more than 45 years

ago where Mr Vier died 25 or 26 year ago.
Mrs Vier when a girl of 13 years of age,heard on the celebrated debates between
Stephen A Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. she remembered more about the appearance
of the two men,than the words they spoke. And being a young critical miss,where
men were concerned she vividly always remembered how ugly Abe Lincoln really
was.
Mrs. Vier is survived by five children,there daughters and two sons. They are
Mrs.A.L.Barger and Mrs L.B. Yatesof this city;John Vier of Salt Lake City
Utah;Ed Vier and Mrs Dr. J.T. Myers both of Hotchkiss Colorado. One daughter
Mrs Caroline Goran died in 1924 at Pacific MO.
Service will be held at the River Funeral home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon with
Rev Ralph a Fox in charge and Rev H.C. Haddock assisting. Interment will be in
the East Cemetery beside the grave of her husband.

The following is directly quoted from the History of Boone County, Missouri originally published in 1882. It is purported to be "written and compiled from the most authentic official and private sources". Please note that some sections of the text uses the "unique spelling of the period" and is as originally published.
It is certainly not inappropriate, but quite the contrary that, as this county was called in honor of Daniel Boone, and for this reason will forever remain a perpetual memory of his life, a short biographical sketch of him should accompany its history.
In regard to his birth, name and death, controversies have arisen among historians and biographers. It is, perhaps, not a remarkable circumstance that doubts and differences exist in regard to the time of Daniel Boone's birth, and as to the orthography of his name, but that there should be any contrariety of statement touching so recent an event as his death, is a little singular.
1. His Birth: He was born in Exeter township, Bucks county, PA, according to Bogant, February 11, 1735; Hartley, same date; Peck, February, 1735; the family record in the handwriting of his Uncle James, July 14, 1732; Flint (who wrote in 1840), 1746; Bogart (who wrote in 1881), August 22, 1734; Switzler (who wrote in 1877), adopts, in his "History of Missouri", the date of James Boone's family record - July 14, 1732. [The county of birth is WRONG here, see my editors note at the bottom.]
2. His Name: Was it Boone or Boon? Many of his descendants who, fifty years and more ago, lived in Missouri, for examples, William, Hampton L., Nestor and William C. Boon, and some of them who yet reside in the State, among whom is William C. Boon, of Jefferson City, omit the final "e". In consequence of this fact, perhaps, the early records of this county, as well as our first county seal, spelled it "Boon". And "Boon's Lick", as applied to the extensive region in Central Missouri known by that name, and in the name of the first newspaper ever published west of the Missouri river, at Franklin, in 1819, the "Missouri Intelligencer and Boon's Lick Advertiser", it is spelled without the "e". Nevertheless, the act of the Legislature organizing Boone county, November 16, 1820; the Franklin, Mo., Intelligencer of 1819, and Lewis C. Beck's Gazetteer of Missouri, 1823, when speaking of the county add the final "e". Yet there is higher authority than either of these for the "e", viz.: Daniel Boone himself, for he thus spelled his name. We have before us now, through the courtesy of Col. Thomas E. Tutt, of St. Louis, a lithographic copy of a letter from Boone addressed to Col. William Christian, of Kentucky, - called "Cristen" in the letter - dated August 23, 1785, and concluding, "you will oblyge your omble sarvent", to which he signs his name as "Daniel Boone". The original letter is now in the possession of Thomas W. Bullet, of Louisville, Ky., who is a grandson of Col. Christian. In the museum of the Louisville, Ky., Public Library there is a genuine autograph letter of Boone dated "Grate Conhoway July the 30th 1789", and addressed to "Col. Hartt & Rochester", which is subscribed as follows: "I am Sir With Respect your very omble Sarvent Daniel Boone". (See letter of Prof. P.A. Towne in the Courier-Journal, 1876). In a letter J.E. Paton, Circuit Clerk of Bourbon county, Ky., written at Paris Ky., December 20, 1876, to the Cincinnati Enquirer, he says there are in his office a number of the genuine signatures of Boone with the final "e". In Collins' "History of Kentucky", Vol. II, page 61, there is a fac simile of a letter of Boone, which, in 1846, was in possession of Joseph B. Boyd, of Maysville, and addressed to "Judge John Cobren, Sant Lewis", dated October 5, 1809, that concludes, "I am Deer Sir youres Daniel Boone". These authorities settle the question beyond cavil.
3. His Life: His father, Squire Boone, came from England, and took up his residence in a frontier settlement in Pennsylvania, where Daniel received the merest rudiments of education, but became thoroughly familiar with the arts and hardships of pioneer life. When he was 18 years old the family moved to the banks of the river Yadkin, in North Carolina, where he married Rebecca Bryan, and passed some years as a farmer. He made several hunting excursions into the wilderness, and finally, in 1769, set out with five others to explore the border region of Kentucky. They halted on Red river, a branch of the Kentucky, where they hunted for several months. In December, 1769, Boone and a companion named Stewart were captured by the Indians, but escaped, and Boone was soon after joined by his brother. They were captured again, and Stewart was killed; but Boone escaped, and his brother going shortly after to North Carolina, he was left alone for several weeks in the wilderness, with only his rifle for means of support.
He was rejoined by his brother, and they continued their explorations till March, 1771, when they returned home with the spoils which they had collected. In 1773 he sold his farm and set out with his family and two brothers, and five other families, to make his home in Kentucky. They were intercepted by Indians and forced to retreat to Clinch river, near the border of Virginia, where they remained for some time, Boone in the meanwhile conducting a party of surveyors into Kentucky for Patrick Henry, the Governor of Virginia. He was afterward appointed, with the commission of a captain, to command three garrisons on the Ohio, to keep back the hostile Indians, and in 1775 was employed to lay out lands in Kentucky for the Pennsylvania Company. He erected a stockade fort on the Kentucky river, which he called Boonsborough, which is now in Madison county, and removed his family to the new settlement, where he was again employed in command of a force to repel the Indians.
In 1778 he went to Blue Licks to obtain salt for the settlement, and was captured and taken to Detroit. His knowledge of the Indian character enabled him to gain favor with his captors, and he was adopted into one of their families. Discovering a plan laid by the British for an Indian attack upon Boonsborough, he contrived to escape, and set out for the Kentucky settlement, which he reached in less than five days. His family, supposing that he was dead, had returned to North Carolina; but he at once put the garrison in order and successfully repelled the attack, which was soon made. He was court-martialed for surrendering his party at the Licks, and for endeavoring to make a treaty with the Indians before the attack on the fort; but, conducting his own defence, he was acquitted and promoted to the rank of major.
In 1780 he brought his family back to Boonsborough, and continued to live there till 1792. At that time Kentucky was admitted into the Union as a State, and much litigation arose about the titles of settlers to their lands. Boone, losing all his possessions for want of a clear title, retired in 1795 in disgust into the wilderness of Missouri, settling on the Femme Osage Creek, in St. Charles County. This region was then under the dominion of Spain, and he was appointed commander of the Femme Osage district, and received a large tract of land for his services, which he also lost subsequently because he failed to make his title good. His claim to another tract of land was confirmed by Congress in 1812, in consideration of his eminent public services.
The latter years of his life he spent in Missouri, with his son, Nathan Boone, near Marthasville, where he died September 26, 1820, aged eighty-six. The only original portrait of Boone in existence was painted by Mr. Chester Harding in 1820, and now hangs in the State-house at Frankfort, Kentucky. His remains were interred by the side of his wife's, who died March 18, 1813, near the village named, where they continued to repose until August, 1845, when they were removed for interment in the public cemetery at Frankfort.
The consent of the surviving relations of the deceased having been obtained, a commission was appointed under whose superintendence the removal was effected; and the 13th of September, 1845, was fixed upon as the time when the ashes of the venerable dead would be committed with fitting ceremonies to the place of their final repose. It was a day which will be long remembered in the history of Franklin County, Kentucky. The deep feeling excited by the occasion was evinced by the assembling of an immense concourse of citizens from all parts of the State; and the ceremonies were most imposing and impressive. A procession extending more than a mile in length accompanied the coffin to the grave. The hearse, decorated with evergreens and flowers, and drawn by four white horses, was placed in its assigned position in the line, accompanied, as pall-bearers, by the following distinguished pioneers, viz.: Col. Richard M. Johnson, of Scott; Gen. James Taylor, of Campbell; Capt. James Ward, of Mason; Gen. Robert B. McAfee and Peter Jordan, of Mercer; Walter Bullock, Esq., of Fayette; Capt. Thomas Joyes, of Louisville; Mr. London Sneed, of Franklin; Col. John Johnson, of the State of Ohio; Maj. E.E. Williams, of Kenton, and Col. William Boone, of Shelby. The procession was accompanied by several military companies and the members of the Masonic Fraternity and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, in rich regalia. Arrived at the grave, the company was brought together in a beautiful hollow near the grove, ascending from the centre on every side. Here the funeral services were performed. The hymn was given out by Rev. Mr. Godell, of the Baptist Church; prayer by Bishop Soule, of the Methodist Episcopal Church; oration by the Hon. John J. Crittenden; closing prayer by the Rev. J.J. Bullock, of the Presbyterian Church, and benediction of the Eld. P.S. Fall, of the Christian Church. The coffins were then lowered into the graves. The spot where the graves are situated is as beautiful as nature and art combined can make it. It is designed to erect a monument on the place.
4. His Death: Timothy Flint, in his biography (1840), states that it occurred "in the year 1818, and in the eighty-fourth year of his age;" Hartley, on September 26, 1820, in his eighty-sixth year; Bogart, the same; Switzler, the same, except that his age was eighty-eight; and Chester Harding, who painted from life the celebrated portrait of him in June, 1820, and who fixes his age at ninety, also fixes his death as occuring in 1820. (See Harding's "Egotistigraphy", for a copy of which we are indebted to his son, Gen. James Harding, one of the Board of Railroad Commissioners for Missouri).
We have, however, recently met with higher authority than either of the above writers, and one that conclusively settles the date of his death. In the Franklin (Mo.) Intelligencer of Oct. 14, 1820, there is copied from the St. Louis Enquirer an obituary notice of Daniel Boone, the first paragraph of which is as follows:
DIED.-On the 26th ult. [Sep.] at Charette Village [which was on Femme Osage Creek, in St. Charles County, Mo.], in the ninetieth year of his age, the celebrated Col. DANIEL BOONE, discoverer and first settler of the State of Kentucky.
This disposes of the question conclusively.
He died at the residence of his son, Maj. Nathan Boone, which was an old-style two-story house, the first of the kind erected west of the Missouri river, and it is yet standing. A good wood cut of it can be found in "Switzler's History of Missouri", page 180.
The obituary in the Enquirer also says that on the 28th September, Mr. Emmons, Senator from Saint Charles County, communicated the intelligence of his death to the Legislature, then in session in St. Charles, and that "both branches of that body, through respect to his memory, adjourned for the day, and passed a resolution to wear crape on the left arm for twenty days".
One of his sons, Jesse B. Boone, was at the time a member of the Legislature from the county of Montgomery.

As some knowlegable and observant viewers have pointed out, there is significant confusion over the date and location of Daniel Boone's birth. While we are not attempting to be a definitive source, we will reference some other researchers information so that you may judge for yourself.
According to a contemporary of Switzler, the book "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri" by Wm. S. Brian and Robert Rose, published by Bryan, Brand and Co., St. Louis in 1876, p 3. :
"Daniel Boone was born in Bucks county, Pennsylvania, October 22, 1734. His grandfather, George Boone, was a native of England, and resided at Brandwich, about eight miles from Exeter. In 1717 he emigrated to America, with his family, consisting of his wife and eleven children, two daughers and nine sons. Soon after his arrival in America he purchased a large tract of land in what is now Bucks county Pennsylvania, settled upon it and named it Exeter, after his native town. The township still bears that name."
A later, and presumably better researched work, "Dictionary of Missouri Biography", edited by Christensen published in 1999 by University of Missouri Press, ISBN 0-8262-1222-0. p98 says :
"Born on a farm on the banks of Owantin Run in Oley township, Pennsylvania (Present-day Exeter township, near Reading), on October 22 1734, ..."
As for other current researchers, I would like to point out the work of Jesse Proctor Crump which can be found on the Boone Ancestors and Descendants webpages (no longer active link - http://booneinfo.com/daniel.htm) where Mr. Crump states in his biography :
"In the year 1730 Squire Boone purchased ..., a tract ... situated in his father's Township of Oley, in the then Philadelphia County, ..., eight miles Southeast of the present City of Reading ... . In the home established here Daniel Boone was born October 22, 1734."
He goes on further to say:
"The records of the Exeter Monthly Meeting show that Daniel, son of Squire and Sarah Boone, was born "8-22-1734"; this being Julian or Old Style of reckoning time, the first month of the year being March, the eighth month would be October, making the date of his birth October 22, 1734, same as shown in his Bible.

Doing a little research on the counties in Pennsylvania shows : The County of Berks contains the town of Reading (in the center of the county), and has a township named Exeter and another Oley. Searching the counties in PA for townships of the name Exeter, locates only the counties of Berks, Luzerne and Wyoming, but noticably not Bucks. (source:USGS ) In addition, Berks was formed in 1752 from the earlier counties of Chester, Lancaster, Philadelphia. (source:PAGenWeb )
While Bucks county is in the area of Berks (the eastern edge of Pennsylvania), it does not contain any of the features mentioned by any of the sources above.
As I suspect most will, I give more weight to the recent researchers work referenced above. I therefore conclude that both Switzler and Bryan are wrong in stating that D. Boone was born in Bucks County, but instead was born in Berks County Pennsylvania. As for the date, I would have to state that as 8-22-1734, and otherwise I leave it to Mr. Crump and his calculations.
The Early Years of Daniel Boone

Author's Note: In the middle of the 19th century, Lyman Copeland Draper roamed the documents on early frontier history. One of his favorite subjects was Daniel Boone, the man who so long has personified the frontier. Since Boone was poorly educated he wrote few letters, but his relatives and friends were still living at the time Draper was amassing his materials. From them Draper collected a wealth of information which went into his "Life of Boone," a biography which was never finished and thus has remained unpublished. Draper's "Life of Boone" would have been the definitive work on this outstanding American. In the 20th Century other authors have written about Boone and all of them have used Draper's story to a great extent. His work deserves to he published.
The manuscript, along with other Draper materials, is owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society and is available on microfilm. Unfortunately the handwritten manuscript is extremely difficult to read. This transcription will, hopefully, make the biography more widely available, fill in a few gaps of Paul A. W. Wallace's excellent book "Daniel Boone in Pennsylvania", and allow the reader to glimpse a view of eastern Pennsylvania in a simpler day. The story, as transcribed here with a few editorial changes, begins with the ancestors of Boone.
Boone's Ancestry, Birth, Childhood with Boyish Anecdotes.
In May 1769, Daniel Boone, an obscure individual on the western confines of Carolina, started to wander through the wilderness of America in quest of the country of "Kentucke." This, in his own expressive language, was the object in view and herein commenced his great mission of western exploration and adventure. To Boone this passion was uncontrollable but there was a Providence in it; if indeed he did nor see it, then he would come to realize it later.
That fair land Kentucky the land of promise then reposed in the quiet of its primeval beauty and grandeur. The buffalo, elk, bear, deer and other wild game roamed everywhere. It was a hunter's paradise. But in all this charming region the habitation of a white man was nowhere visible; no ruthless axe had yet invaded this land of forests and green meads.
When in 1792 Kentucky became a member of the American Republic, it was inhabited by over a million happy, peaceful people. Who was this "humble instrument" ordained to settle some of the fairest portions of the New World? He was Daniel Boone no ordinary man the pioneer of Kentucky.
Early Boones In America
Several persons bearing the name "Boone" were among early settlers of the British colonies. Nearly all were from England although Henry Boone (or DeBone) was of French origin. The Boones of Maryland became extensive and soon migrated to New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It is recorded in a newspaper of that day that Robert Boone, an honest and industrious planter, died of old age, Feb. 9, 1759, at his plantation on the north side of the Severn, near Annapolis, Md., on the very place where he was born in 1680 and from which he never wandered for more than 30 miles during his entire lifetime. He left a widow to whom he had been wed for 57 years.
Thomas Boone, probably a native of England, was appointed royal governor of New Jersey in 1760 and the following year transferred to the government of South Carolina. In 1769 he returned to England where he was named a commissioner of customs. He remained in England when the Revolutionary War began. There were numerous Boones in America and the earliest ancestor of Daniel, to our knowledge, was George Boone, a native of England, who had a son of the same name born in the city of Exeter, Devonshire. The second George Boone, a blacksmith by trade, was married to Miss Sarah Uffey and their son, George, was born at the village of Stoak, near the city of Exeter, in 1666. He learned the trade of weaver.
The latter George married Mary Maugridge who was three years his junior and they had nine children: George, Sarah, Squire, Mary, John, Joseph, Benjamin, James, and Samuel. All except John married and many descendants remained. Squire Boone was the father of Colonel Daniel Boone (the second son and third child of George and Mary Boone). Squire was born on the "fourth day of the week, between eleven and twelve in the forenoon of the 25th of November 1696." Like his father, he was a weaver but he had the wanderlust.
In 1717 George, Sarah and Squire Boone went to Pennsylvania at the insistence of their parents to personally inspect the prospects and inducements for the permanent settlement of the family in that flourishing province. The exploratory visit came between 1712 and 1714.
Old George Boone and Mary had embraced the faith of the Society of Friends (Quakers) and were increasingly turning their attention to Sir William Penn's inviting colony located in America's wilderness. The hope of bettering their own and children's lives in the New World were inspiring them.
With a favorable report, George Boone returned to England leaving Squire and Sarah in Pennsylvania. Preparations then began to take the family to America's distant shores. George Boone never hesitated in the endeavor. They left England on Aug. 17, 1717, and landed in Philadelphia on Oct. 10th. They first lived in Abington, now Montgomery County, some 14 miles north of Philadelphia. This settlement was composed almost entirely of Quakers with Robert Fletcher, a noted public figure, residing there.
From here George moved to a small hamlet of North Wales in Gwynedd Township, a few miles from present-day Abington. Originally settled by the Welsh, Gwynedd also had two Quaker families residing there. Sir William Penn was said to have visited this community around 1700.
During this same period Sarah Boone married Jacob Stover, a German of much character, who settled in Oley Township, then part of Philadelphia County. This brought George Boone to Oley and he was so pleased he took out a warrant in 1718 for 400 acres of land, and most likely relocated his family there the following year.
Among his worthy neighbors was Arthur Lee, a native of England, and also a Quaker. Some of the family's nearest neighbors were Indians who delighted in having the benevolent families in their country. Neither Lee nor Boone were ever molested by Indians.
First George Boone erected a cabin and in 1733 built a more spacious house occupied by son James. George Boone and his wife, Mary are buried in the Friend's burial ground in Exeter.
While in Gwynedd, Squire Boone met Sarah Morgan, descendant of the celebrated Gen. Daniel Morgan of the Revolution. Both were Quakers and on the 6th day of May 1720, they declared to the Gwynedd Meeting their intention to marry. They were married July 23rd.
Little has been handed down relative to the personal appearance of the newly married couple. One relative later recalled "Squire Boone was a man of rather small stature, fair complexion, red hair and gray eyes; while his wife was a woman something over the common size, strong and active, with black hair and eyes and raised in the Quaker order."
Near the close of 1730, Squire Boone obtained a grant of 250 acres of land, situated in Oley, now Exeter Township, about a mile above the confluence of the Owatin Creek with the Monocacy. He began weaving and farming and gradually accumulated enough money to purchase a home in Oley where land was moderately priced.
With the help of relatives and Quaker neighbors, a log cabin was erected and the family lived a simple life. Women of this era were always industrious and generally clothed their families by their own handicraft. Bread, milk and pie usually composed the frugal morning meal with good pork or bacon and a wheat flour pudding or dumplings with butter or molasses served for dinner. The evening meal was comprised of milk, butter and honey with mush or hominy.
Chocolate was a rarity but sweetening was done with maple sugar. Venison and wild turkey was served in season. Only the wealthiest of farmers had a wagon to go to market.
Daniel Boone was the fourth son and sixth child of Squire and Sarah Boone. Born in Oley, then Philadelphia County, Nov. 2, 1734. He was most likely named after Daniel Boone, a distinguished Dutch painter, who died in London in 1698 and to whom the family could have been distantly related.
From his infancy, Daniel Boone seems to have possessed to an unusual degree those amiable traits of character that won him the love and esteem of his acquaintances. His uncle, John Webb, was fond of taking him as his house guest with his three sons and daughters as playmates.
The sight of Indians must have been among his earliest recollections. The Indians would visit both the Oley and Exeter settlements and were kindly entertained by the Quaker families. It is recorded in the provincial records of Pennsylvania, that in the summer of 1736, the famous old Delaware chief Sassanoon or Allummoppees with several other chiefs young men, women and children numbering 25 altogether arrived at George Boone's on their way to Philadelphia and were entertained. It was there that they learned of Patrick Gordon's recent death (he was lieutenant governor of the province).
These and similar bands of red men visiting the area must have afforded to the inquisitive mind of young Boone curious and interesting subjects of study and contemplation laying the foundation of his knowledge of the Indian's character. In October, 1744, Squire Boone took out a warrant for 25 acres of land in Oley five or six miles north of the family homestead. From the age of 10 to 16 years young Boone was constantly sent to watch the herd grazing there. For the first several years he would carry with him a staff made of a small sapling grubbed by the roots, properly shaved down leaving a rooty knob at the end. He called this his herdsman's club.
While attending the cattle, young Boone would creep stealthily upon birds and other small game and throw his club killing the game. He studied all the wild life studiously and within his nomadic early years started to kindle his live of nature in all aspects.
When he was 12 or 13 years old, Daniel's father yielded to his request and purchased for him a short rifle-gun which he soon mastered as both a marksman and hunter. His love for the chase became a passion and much fresh meat was brought home to the Boone family. Often his herd of cattle was neglected and went astray.
Boone's Education
Daniel Boone never went to school a day in his life (story he is said to have told his own children). When he was 14, his brother Samuel nearly seven years his senior married an amiable and intelligent young lady named Darah Day. She taught Daniel to read and spell a little. He could at first do little more than write his own name in an uncouth and mechanical way. To these humble beginnings he added something as he grew up and went on to even understand the basics of arithmetic. He could eventually read understandingly and write intelligently.
Reared under the peaceful influence of the Quakers, he would nevertheless fearlessly maintain his right as he understood them. Squire Boone, in addition to his farming and weaving operations, carried on the smithing business for repairing guns as well as executing the customary work involved with farming. Daniel was set to work in the smithing shop and acquired a mechanical knowledge of what pertained to the gun and rifle.
Such was the life of Boone's boyhood days. Much aided in the foundation of what was to become the later years of this renowned American frontiersman.

I, Elizabeth White, whom lives in Madison County and State aforesaid, where I have resided for several years, last past. I am upwards of eighty years of age and am the widow of William White deceased. That I am the sister of Samuel Boon, who now resides in Clarke County and state aforesaid and family resided for a great many years in Fayette County in said state. And that Rebecca Jones who now reside in Fayette County aforesaid , also the sister of said Samuel Boon. That said Samuel Boon was upwards of seventy four years of age. That during the revolutionary war said Boon lived on Congee river in Camden district, South Carolina in his said Boon’s father’s family. And that he was then an inmate of said family and the well members that he was drafted four different times to serve four distinct times of duty in the militia of South Carolina, but he does not know what length of time he served upon either on all of said times. What he believes from her best recollection that said Samuel Boon served on each term the normal time. And she remembers that he marched four distinct times as a militiaman, under four different drafts in the South Carolina Militia, as above stated and if he did not server out his time in each instance she has forgotten it. And never heard that but she has always heard that he did . And … believes that he did do so. That owing to her great age and cause great infirmity, aggravated by a fall during the last winter she was unable to ride to the Clarke Circuit to make the foregoing statement before the Judge, thereof in open Court. As written of my hand, the 24th day of September 1832.

"Are You a Genealogist, or Just a Collector of Genealogy?"

"What is your source for that?" This is a question that I used to get quite often, especially in the "old days" when I first started putting my genealogy data on the Internet. Back then I was putting my data onto web pages in Register Report format, and without any documentation included. Sincere researchers would ask me how I came by the information, or why it differed from something that they had found. It took a lot of time to answer those questions via e-mail. (Especially considering the volume of e-mail that I was getting).
Eventually I wised up and began to add documentation to my web pages. This cut down on that particular question about my sources. However, after several years online, and now considering myself something of an "expert", I'm saddened to see that most other personal genealogy pages (and submitted genealogies) on the Internet still do not contain documentation. There are exceptions of course, but I'd guess that at least 75% of the online family data is undocumented (I mean that the documentation is not listed with the data).
In this new age of Internet Genealogy, more and more people are trying to get as much info as they can, and as quickly as possible, never minding if the data is accurate or not. This is unfortunate, but a fact of life. It was often true before the Internet, and now it is even worse. With just a few clicks, someone new to genealogy can find numerous generations of family data online at various "repositories", or on CD collections containing the same sort of submitted research. Unfortunately the quality and accuracy of the data varies, and since, in most cases, documentation is not included, there is no way to be sure if the data is good or not.
The lack of documentation is probably the biggest problem with the online data. (Not to mention the gross errors found in many of the compilations). The second biggest problem is related to the first. Many of the new researchers who have found this undocumented (and often wrong) data, turn around and add their data to it, and put it into their own web pages, or submit it to the various data repositories, thus compounding the problem.
Except in rare cases, I do not ask anyone "What is your source for that", because most often, they don't know where the data came from. "I found it somewhere on the Internet" is a typical answer, or that "I got it from so and so, but I don't know where they got it". This is a major problem. Don't get me wrong, I've been just as guilty of this in the past, especially when I was first starting out. But I eventually learned my lesson. I found it quite embarrassing having to tell someone I did not have a source for a particular item, and that I did not know where the data came from. Occasionally I still feel this sting of embarrassment when some little tidbit of data has been questioned, and I can't figure out where I got it from. It could always be a leftover from my early days of research, when I didn't worry about documentation.
Just so I don't look like a total hypocrite, I should mention that some of my web pages (even now) do not contain documentation, but for the record, I say those pages are "under construction", and they will have documentation on them eventually. A couple of years ago, after I realized the error of my ways (with undocumented pages), I deleted my entire website, and started over, only re-publishing pages that contained documentation, one at a time, as I could document them. I received such an outpouring of "complaints" (polite ones of course) from my visitors, that I was convinced to put all the pages back online, even without the documentation included yet. I never realized it would take years to get it all done, but each page of mine takes anywhere from one day to a week to get properly documented (the way I do it, anyway). So it will take a long time to get them all done properly.
What is proper documentation, anyway?
Documenting your data online can be done in any number of ways. My way is to make the web pages for a particular family read just like a book on that family would read. First some commentary, containing documentation, stories, theories, etc. Then similar data on each of the children (with links to those children who get their own separate page), and finally, a Register Report. This format is time consuming to create, but the result is very rewarding, and I think, somewhat unique (on the Internet, anyway), or at least it was when I first started doing it. I'm glad to know that others have used this same format for their own pages.
To help those who may not understand, or who just need a refresher course, use the links at the top left to read about the various types of evidence that I have used (primary, secondary, etc.), and how they are prioritized, and what is usually considered reliable, and what isn't. There have been many books and articles published on this very subject, but the following is just my take on the subject, and does not (as far as I know) represent any "official" genealogical standard, but it is what I use in my daily research.
What are my sources for any particular family
The format I use to present my data (standard register report) makes it difficult to list sources for each piece of data, so I don't even try to do it that way. (I've seen other pages with the sources listed that way, and I really don't like the way it looks). What I've been doing (and it is a slow process) is to put a commentary section at the top of each page. In this section, I list the evidence I've used to come to various conclusions. I try to document the life of the primary family members, chronologically, using all available source documentation. If other researchers or published sources were used, I list those as well. I still have a long way to go before I get all of my pages to this level. So if the documentation isn't listed, contact me and I'll be glad to share (keep in mind I get tons of e-mail, and it may take awhile). If I have a documented page, but there is some fact listed, but no documentation is presented for it; go ahead and ask me about it. It was probably an oversight on my part for not including it.
What if you think my data is wrong
Please tell me! I'm sure that I have errors throughout my data. Omissions are the most likely error. It is impossible not to have errors. If you have proof for something that contradicts what I have, feel free to share it. If you don't have proof, but you think I'm wrong, let me know anyway, perhaps you are correct anyway, even without proof. If I feel that I'm right, I'll be glad to explain why. If we both feel we are right, but not in agreement, I'll be glad to mention the difference in the commentary section. I don't mind showing alternate views, even if they seriously contradict my own particular belief about a family.
What if I didn't give you proper credit
If you have shared data with me and I have used that data on my web pages, and I didn't mention you in my sources, first of all, accept my apology! Secondly, let me know about it and I'll correct that right away. I certainly don't want to offend anyone, but many times people will send me data I already have, and in those cases I might not list them as a source. Either that or I just plain goof and fail to note who sent me information. I generally don't credit people as a source who send me undocumented data (unless they share the documentation also) since I'm not going to use undocumented information anyway.
Contributing data to be posted online (Commentaries, census records, etc)
If you want to write a commentary (brief, or extensive) about one of our common families, please let me know. I'll be glad to publish it on the web pages, space permitting. If you already have a web page, let me know about it, and I'll provide a link to yours from mine. I'd appreciate a link from yours as well.

If you have compiled abstracts of public records pertaining to our common family (marriages, census records, deeds, wills, etc) I'd love to publish them online! Any records you contribute for publication will be properly credited to you. However, I won't re-publish data that was copied from someone else's published data abstracts. If the data came from a book, or other publication, I won't republish it. However, if it came direct from the original source, I will be glad to publish it online for you.

Why Bother? The Value of Documentation in Family History Research

New family historians often ask: What's all this hubbub about documentation? Why does it matter, and what difference does it make where I got my information? After all, I am just doing this as a hobby, or to sort out the branches on the family tree for the upcoming reunion. Often there is the feeling that "I'm not going to publish my findings or write a book" and no one is going to see this research but me. Anyway, I'm just doing this for fun and the fun is in the searching, not in writing down, in minute detail, where the information came from, so "cut me some slack and lay off the preaching about citing sources."
Well, I can appreciate those thoughts; they are not much different than my thinking several years ago when I got started. But since then, I've seen the light! Let me share with you three of the many reasons why you want to document your family history findings. Let's begin with the most useful reason.
Documentation Will Make Your Research Easier and Faster
Surprising, but true. Taking time to document where you got your facts (or allegations) will save you time later in your research. Let's face it, most of us do our research a little bit a time, as we have time and opportunities. Often you do some research on one family, only to set it aside for a couple years (or more) while other activities, and even other research, take priority. Well, what happens when you sit down to work on that line you put off two or three years ago? Without writing down what you searched and where you found your information, you will likely look at some of the same sources again, only to find, or not find, what you had already learned. Like me, I am sure you do not want to spin your wheels redoing what you did earlier. Indeed, isn't that part of what we love about genealogy? It's always a new adventure. No two searches, or families, are quite the same.
Example We would have found one of my wife's ancestors much faster if her cousins had documented the source of their information sooner. For years we heard that Frank Cromwell came from Woodstock, but the state was not given. We searched every Woodstock in the northern states (there are more than a dozen) without finding him. Many years later, when her cousins sent us a picture of Frank's mother, we learned the source of the Woodstock statement. The back of the picture included the name and city of the photographer. Only then did we find out that this was a fair-sized city, with a photography studio in the mid-nineteenth century. This seemingly insignificant piece of documentation redirected our efforts to Woodstock, Ontario where we did find Frank and his family.
Documentation Helps Prevent Duplication of Research
In the course of our research, we can't help but spend some time researching families others have already researched. Eventually, someone else will be researching some of the very same families we are looking for today. Indeed, one of the admonitions new researchers receive is to check for "previous research." Most of us don't have time to do only "original research" on all of our families, after all, every person we find means there are two more (his or her parents) for us to find. We depend on quality previous research to speed us along our search. Without documentation, we do not know what sources somebody has already used. This means we will likely use some of the same sources the earlier family historian used. This wastes our time and resources which could better be used to solve problems others haven't tackled yet.
Example Years ago I located a distant cousin who had acquired some pedigree charts and family group records about a common ancestor, Penelope Hazzard. Clarence King had compiled these pages in the 1950s, but he had assigned different parents to Penelope than had my third-great Aunt (Arcelli Hall). My task was to determine which, if either set of parents, were correct. Much to my dismay, none of the material I received from Clarence King or Aunt Arcelli indicated how they arrived at their conclusions. It took me about two days of research in probate, land, and other records to learn that Clarence had made the right connection. Oh, how I wish he had just made a simple suggestion such as "according to Joshua Raymond's will, Penelope was an unrecorded child of Oliver Hazzard and Elizabeth Raymond."
Documentation Gives Others Confidence in Your Research
Yes, this is the old standby reason you read in every genealogy textbook, but that does not make it any less true. Indeed, nobody seems to argue with the genealogist's maxim: Without proof, there is no truth. The problem is that many people, especially those just starting out, do not plan on publishing their research findings, as they are just doing it for their own interest. But, let's examine that concept for a minute. Throughout the course of our research we are constantly using the research of others. It may be a published family history, a brief biographical sketch, or a computerized lineage from Ancestral File or the World Family Tree. As noted above, our research moves forward much faster when we use such resources. Now, if we use such resources, aren't we obligated in some way to contribute (i.e. give back) to that growing pool of previously solved genealogical puzzles?
When we eventually do contribute new information to the database of our choice, or print up a booklet for a family reunion, won't we want those who use our information to believe what we say is true? If you have ever had to correct (or demolish) a cherished "family tradition," (and some of us get a strange sense of satisfaction in doing so), you will want to document your findings to make them believable. Of course, not everyone will believe you over Uncle Lester, but many will, and the your true version of the story will eventually be accepted, but only if others have confidence in your research.
Even if you continue to resist publishing (in print or electronic format) parts of your family history, you will likely end up communicating with some distant (or close) cousin doing research on a line common to both of you. This is simply a function of genealogical "networking." As you research, you will find another researcher who has submitted information to the International Genealogy Index or one of the databases noted above, or written an article for a local genealogical periodical, or joined a lineage society with your common ancestor. You will naturally want to contact him or her to learn if they have more information. They will want to exchange information and learn what you have found out. You may place a query seeking information about a problem, or answer one from another researcher.
In all of these situations, you will want others to have confidence in your research, just as you will want to have confidence in theirs. That confidence can be had for just a little bit of documentation.
Documentation Doesn't Have to Be Hard
Perhaps the biggest objection to documentation is the dismay at the necessity of proper formatting when citing sources. Well, guess what? There are so many ways to cite sources, that formatting your citations should not be a big hang-up or time commitment. Certainly if you are submitting an article for a scholarly journal you would be expected to follow their citation format. Lineage societies require a certain level of documentation to constitute proof of a connection. And, indeed there are some emerging standards for "scholarly documentation." However, the good news is that you DO NOT need to follow those standards in everything you document.
There is only one hard and fast rule for general documentation: Record enough information so that another researcher can determine what you have searched. Thus it is not enough to say "U.S. Census" for a source. That is not specific: Which year? Which county and state? What page number? You would want to say, for example, "1850 census, Berrien County, Michigan, page 213." This however is the bare minimum. This is adequate for many research purposes, and it is information that is already on your research log.
Research log? I certainly hope that as a family historian, you have learned the value of a research log or calendar of searches. This is the beginning of documentation, and helps fulfill all three of the reasons for documentation that I've given in this article:
A research log speeds your research by easily listing just what sources you have already searched, and what your results were.
It also limits duplication of your research efforts by reminding you what you searched, when you searched, and who you were looking for in that source.
Lastly, it is a quick way to provide confidence to others with whom you share your findings, as you can easily photocopy or print out a copy of your log.
For those who want to go just a little further in citing their sources, the six elements of a good source citation include:
Author (who provided the information)
Title
Publication information (publisher, location)
Date of the information (usually the year)
Location of the source you used (library or archive) and the call number
